What is shared among the Yugoslav diaspora and the queer diaspora is this idea of a golden era, that is located either in the past or in a possible future; if this utopia has indeed existed in the past, the way we imagined it, we would have never needed to go anywhere. Or what would happen if we unite again…? These musings reveal both the endless opportunities and many limitations for imagining this possible future. Consequently, many Balkan queer artists and those in the diaspora, bond over ideas of potential futures devoid of nation-states, borders and divisions, both in gender and cultures. Others are, more concerned about what this future will bring us if we continue to participate in the present dominant structures of nationalism, capitalism and patriarchy.
Exhibited artworks of Pavle Banović, Anastasija Pavić, Stanko Gagrčin, Hannah Neckel and Kristina Tica try to reinvent the present and imagine possible futures. They range from rethinking the role of the “personal” in art, the position of the artist as inventor, redefining the positions of both artist and viewer as hybrid forms of accomplice and object, to inventing utopian and dystopian visions of life after losing any firm ground in physical reality.

Was die Jugoslawische Diaspora und die queere Diaspora gemeinsam haben, ist die Idee einer goldenen Ära, die entweder in der Vergangenheit oder in einer möglichen Zukunft liegt; wenn dieses Utopia in der Art, wie wir es uns vorgestellt haben, in der Vergangenheit existiert haben sollte, hätten wir nirgendwo hingehen müssen. Oder was würde passieren wenn wir uns wieder zusammentun…? Diese Überlegungen legen sowohl die endlosen Möglichkeiten als auch die vielen Einschränkungen offen für das Imaginieren einer möglichen Zukunft. Viele queere Balkan Künstler:innen und jene der Diaspora verbindet daher die Vorstellung von potenziellen Zukünften ohne Nationalstaaten, Grenzen und Trennungen, was beides: Geschlecht und Kulturen betrifft. Andere zeigen sich wiederum besorgt dahingehend, was die Zukunft bringen wird, wenn wir weiterhin an den gegenwärtigen, dominanten Strukturen von Nationalismus, Kapitalismus und Patriarchat teilnehmen.
Gezeigte Arbeiten von Pavle Banović, Anastasija Pavić, Stanko Gagrčin, Hannah Neckel und Kristina Tica versuchen die Gegenwart neu zu definieren und sich mögliche Zukünfte vorzustellen. Sie reichen vom Überdenken der Rolle des “Persönlichen” in der Kunst, der Position der Künstler:in als Erfinder:in, der Neudefinition der Positionen von Künstler:in und Betrachter:in als Hybridformen von Komplize:in und Objekt bis hin zum Erfinden von utopischen und dystopischen Visionen des Lebens nach dem Verlust jeglichen festen Bodens in der physischen Realität.
